About Me

David Joel Miller

Just a little bit about me. Feel free, of course, to ask questions as this journey progresses. I have been an avid reader my whole life. It has always been my hope that someday I would be able to write. But I struggled so much with spelling and grammar and a couple of other learning disabilities that I gave up the idea of ever being able to write anything worth reading and concluded that I wouldn’t be able to create anything others with care to read. Thank goodness for Grammarly, spellcheckers, and other editing software.

For the first ten years of my life, I lived in the Midwest, Michigan, and Indiana, to be specific. Then, I arrived in California just in time for the nineteen sixties and have never looked back. I have moved so many times in my life that I find it hard to answer the question, “where is your hometown.” My usual answer is, “I’m not from around here.” I graduated from high school in Santa Clara County, now the home of Silicon Valley. But when I lived there, it still had open fields and apricot and prune orchards to play in.

Across the intervening years, I’ve moved repeatedly and traveled extensively. I’ve worked at multiple jobs and had several assorted careers. In addition, I’ve traveled extensively on the West Coast of the United States. Along the way, I completed an AS degree and a BS degree, started two Masters’ programs and one Ph.D. program, and ultimately finished my MS degree – a master’s in counseling with a specialty in marriage and family therapy.

For over twenty years now, I’ve worked in substance abuse counseling, mental health counseling, coaching, and teaching in counselor training programs.

My writing career, along with other creative endeavors, began again in 2011. Since then, I’ve been writing a blog (counselorssoapbox.com) focused on mental health, substance abuse counseling, and having a happy life. Starting in 2017, I’ve written and self-published seven books, all currently available on Amazon. Finally, beginning in 2020, I began creating YouTube videos (counselorssoapbox YouTube Video Channel)  largely for my counseling students.

I’ve come a long way, and I know I still have a long way to go. So I decided now was the time to share some of the things I’ve learned along my writing journey, so I started this new blog (davidjoelmillerwriter.com) devoted specifically to discussing my creative efforts in both writing and in producing videos. I hope you will join me along the way.
